Selected Work 2005-2006

Complicit

This is the inspiration of Johanna Drucker, Art Historian and Visual Poet whose work is represented in major collections throughout the U.S. and Europe. "Complicit" will feature artists whose work engages mass material culture and studio-based practices. A new wave of highly self-conscious, formally eclectic, referentially rich work extends the influence of conceptualism to produce highly imaginative and seductive objects. This work suggests that the function of art is to create a space for aesthetic experience and cultural memory within the mono-culture through transformation and invention. The work is thus complicit in many senses: playful, flirtatious, seductive and pleasurable in its complex dialogue with contemporary life.

The exhibition will include work from Alexis Rockman, Jessica Stockholder, Jeff Wall, Gregory Crewdson, Alberto Rey, Geoff McGann, Vic Muniz, Liz Craft, Lisa Yuskavage, Daniel Wiener, Kerry James Marshall, Judy Fox, Iona Rozeal Brown and Robert Colescott. The exhibition will draw on arguments and artists discussed in Ms. Drucker's book, "Sweet Dreams: Contemporary Art and Complicity", which was recently published by the University of Chicago Press in the Spring of 2005. "Complicit" opens on September 1, 2006 at the University of Virginia Art Museum.
